Preparing Future Assistive Technology Professionals for Blindness and Low Vision Services
The Assistive Technology Specialist Program at VisionLink Solutions, LLC is designed to prepare individuals for professional work in assistive technology instruction and support for people who are blind or have low vision. This program provides structured, hands-on training in the knowledge and practical skills needed to assess needs, support accessibility, teach technology use, and help individuals increase independence through adaptive tools and systems.
The program includes instruction in screen readers, screen magnification, accessible mobile devices, computers, adaptive software, device setup, troubleshooting, training methods, documentation practices, and service delivery approaches used in blindness rehabilitation and assistive technology settings. Training is individualized, progressive, and focused on building both technical skill and instructional competence.
This program is a minimum of 18 months in length and is designed to prepare the customer to sit for the CATIS certification under Category 3 requirements. The program supports the development of the foundational knowledge, applied training experience, and professional skill-building needed for individuals pursuing work in assistive technology and blindness services.
The Assistive Technology Specialist Program is appropriate for individuals seeking to enter the field of assistive technology, strengthen their professional skills, or pursue a pathway toward certification and work in rehabilitation, education, or blindness-related service environments. Instruction emphasizes practical application, problem-solving, professionalism, and real-world readiness.
Assistive Technology Specialist Program
- Build both technical skill and instructional skill: Customers should learn not only how assistive technology works, but also how to teach, demonstrate, and support its use effectively for individuals who are blind or have low vision.
- Use hands-on training across multiple devices and platforms: Instruction should include practical experience with screen readers, magnification, mobile technology, computers, accessibility features, and troubleshooting in real-world situations.
- Develop a long-term pathway toward certification and professional readiness: Because the program is a minimum of 18 months and align with CATIS Category 3 preparation, training should focus on building knowledge, applied practice, documentation habits, and professional confidence over time.
